Newsom, delivering his first State of the State handle Tuesday, stated he’d shift his focus to finishing only a 171-mile phase of the road already below building within the state’s Central Valley. The mission is essential to the financial vitality of the state’s agricultural heartland, he stated.
A high-speed rail line linking Los Angeles to San Francisco was the objective when voters permitted a poll measure in 2008. The roughly 520-mile line initially was estimated to value $33 billion and was pegged for completion in 2020. Officers ultimately hoped to attach the road to San Diego and Sacramento.
Subsequent estimates greater than doubled the associated fee to $77 billion and pushed the timeline to 2033.

Newsom stated the state risked having to return $3.5 billion in federal cash if constructing stopped on the Central Valley leg or it didn’t full environmental evaluations. Rail leaders have lengthy stated they didn’t have sufficient state cash to finish the road. Personal funding has been tied to getting extra authorities funding.
